Flotilla Celebrates 100 years Since Mawson Expedition

Scores of vessels assembled on the River Derwent to re-create the farewell given to Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson on 2 December 1911, 100 years ago. Read more.

A 19-gun salute, taken by Governor Peter Underwood on board the Egeria officially started the flotilla at 11am, with modern day Antarctic ships Aurora Australis and L’Astrolabe leading tall ships, vintage yachts, tug boats and cruise ships on the traditional farewell, as far as Opossum Bay.

The Antarctic ships have continued on to the frozen continent, with the bulk of the flotilla returning up the River Derwent under spectacular full sail this afternoon.
