Programs Information

The Wilderness Program has four models of operation that have successfully evolved from the expressed needs of the Tasmanian community over the last two decades of operation.

Community Program

Community Courses are for individuals contemplating positive change in their lives and are available to anyone over 15 years who are willing to challenge themselves. A small group journey through areas of the Tasmanian wilderness for up to six days with two trained facilitators. Opportunities for personal growth occur through activities such as abseiling, kayaking, bushwalking, caving and group discussions.

Everyone shares in camp responsibilities, group decisions/discussions and works on a relevant personal goal. Leadership and taking responsibility is encouraged through experiencing natural consequences of decisions made and in dealing with the various challenges that arise.

The activity day involves a gentle bushwalk where applicants and facilitators get to know each other and is run a few days before each course commences. Facilitators share information about the course and answer any questions applicants may have. This day helps applicants decide if they are ready to attend the course at this time.

Community Courses cost $100.00 per person including GST. Sponsorship may be available from some agencies and schools.

The Community program manifests itself in two formats:

  • Community Course
  • Follow-up Course

Specialist Program

The Wilderness Program, (WiP), Specialist Courses are utilised when another service provider partners with the WiP in order to offer a course exclusively for their client target group.  This model allows individual courses to be tailored to suit group commonalities.

The WiP works collaboratively with the service provider to design courses which address the identified needs of their clients.

The participant group may include service provider staff, value adding to client/practitioner relationships and providing valuable insights to assist future case management.   Specialist courses can be delivered from both a rustic residential or through remote camp setting and course duration is determined according to specific group needs and capabilities.

Professional Development Program

The Wilderness Program (WiP), provide Professional Development courses in order to add value to the many and varied organisations with whom we partner.  WiP offer two styles of professional courses, Wilderness Therapy or Taster Day in order to meet the differing needs of our partners.

All wilderness program training is offered on the basis of experiential learning, explaining program fundamentals while participants engage in the process.  Consequently these courses involve field-based activities.  WiP Professional courses also afford transparency to our partners and enable them to work collaboratively on course design, delivery and follow-up.

The Wilderness Therapy is aimed at helping health professionals, community workers and new Wilderness Program staff members understand the bush counselling/wilderness therapy process. It was devised initially to provide an experiential training program for Wilderness Program facilitators. The program has grown to encompass broad community representation on the program opening up the bush counselling process for inspection by mainstream health professionals.

Corporate Training Program

The Wilderness Program (WiP) can put together a single day, a series of single day activities or a multi-day course for small corporate groups.

WiP Corporate activities involve high and/or low rope courses, micro-bushwalking, abseiling, group initiative exercises and rock climbing or caving.  As in all WiP courses, activities are designed around the identified issues participants have to work on.  Areas we have concentrated on for the corporate sector involved; broadening team relationships, communication, trust, confidence, living with uncertainty and the giving and receiving of feedback.

Multi-day courses are delivered from a rustic accommodation setting within easy reach of main centres.
