Good Practices for your Organisation

Developing Excellence in Organisational Management

How is your organisation's performance in one, or several of the following areas:

  1. Leadership:
    • Do you have a good management structure in place?
    • Is there open communication in your organisation?
    • Are volunteers involved in policy development?
  2. Planning:
    • What plans have you developed for your organisation's growth?
    • How did you state your goals?
    • What was your action plan?
    • What resources did you require?
    • How were your endeavours evaluated?
  3. Volunteers:
    • Does your organisation have a Volunteer Management Policy?(eg: are all volunteers given a job description, rights and responsibilities statement ?) - if not can you plan how to manage your volunteers?
    • Does your organisation have a Volunteer Coordinator? Does this person have a Job Description and Duty statement?
    • How well have you identified volunteer skills?
    • Have volunteers been able to use their skills to the fullest?
    • What recruitment strategies do you have in place?
    • Do you provide opportunities for development and training?
    • Do you actively encourage participation by volunteers in training and personal development activities?
    • How well does your organisation acknowledge and recognise its volunteers? ( eg: certificates aimed to recognise and reward volunteers who have made an outstanding contribution either in management or increasing participation in physical activity in the community)
    • Do you have a volunteer recognition program in place?
    • What do you do to benefit your volunteers?

Screening Committee Members and Treasurers

Volunteer committee members have an ethical responsibility to keep an eye on their organisation’s business.

The legal risks volunteers face when in a position of power within an organisation are worth exploring.

Doing a reference check on individuals handling the organisation’s business is highly recommended. Sometimes we don’t know enough about the people who we rely so heavily on in conducting our organisation’s business.
