Sport and Recreation Services has staff based in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie. The unit provides a range of consultancy services and high quality information and advice to the sector.
Sport and Recreation Services works with other state government organisations, state sporting organisations, local government organisations and community sport and recreation providers to enhance the sport, recreation and physical activity opportunities of Tasmanians.
The unit includes sport and recreation client managers, a policy and research officer and an Indigenous sport project officer.
The Premier’s Physical Activity Council was established in 2001 to promote the various health, wellbeing and social benefits gained through sport, recreation and physical activity to the wider community.
The Premier’s Physical Activity Council has officers based in the southern and northern offices of Sport and Recreation Tasmania.
The Wilderness Program, located in Bellerive, uses wilderness activities to promote positive change in participants’ lives.
Program participants come from diverse backgrounds, including those disadvantaged by personal or economic circumstances, and range in age from 15 to 50 years and beyond.

The Tasmanian Institute of Sport (TIS) provides development opportunities to elite and elite development athletes and coaches through the provision of specific services. These services include high-performance coaching, sports performance testing and technical analysis, sports medicine, sports psychology, sports nutrition, strength and conditioning development, training and competition technology, career and education support, counselling, talent identification and personal development through community interaction activities.
Eligible athletes are also awarded scholarships through the various TIS scholarship programs available.
The TIS is located at the Silverdome in Launceston.
