Biotechnology

Biotechnology is the use of technologies applied to biological processes. Biotechnology has become a rapidly expanding industry throughout the world.

In Tasmania, biotechnology is a new and exciting industry. Tasmania became aware of emerging biotechnology industry following the Tasmanian Biotechnology Sector Analysis conducted in 2001 and the Tasmanian Biotechnology Audit conducted in 2004 -2005. This work was further extended in 2006-2007 with the release of the BioVision Tasmania 2007-2015: Tasmania’s Biotechnology Strategy, aimed at growing the states biotechnology industry.

These reports highlight significant opportunity in several niche areas of marine, agricultural and human health biotechnology and the advantage of Tasmania in retaining its ‘clean green’ status.
