Skilled Migration

Tasmania, Australia’s island state, offers a wide range of employment opportunities for skilled migrants, as well as affordable housing and a great lifestyle in one of the world’s most beautiful environments.

Tasmania’s economy has developed rapidly in recent years and skills shortages have emerged in a number of professions and trades.

If you are a prospective skilled migrant who wishes to settle anywhere in Tasmania, Economic Development and Tourism can nominate/sponsor your visa application through the Skilled Sponsored visa or Skilled Regional Sponsored visa schemes.

Applicants with skills in demand within Tasmania will be given preference, although people with other occupations will be considered if they can demonstrate that they are able to settle and secure skilled employment, or start a business, easily.

Skilled Sponsored applicant's nominated occupation must appear on Tasmania's Skills Shortage List.

Skilled Regional Sponsored applicants must have a nominated occupation on Tasmania's Skilled Regional Sponsored Occupations (SRSO) list and must demonstrate high employability.

All applicants must meet the skilled visa requirements set by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

Sponsorship/nomination applications under both Skilled Sponsored and Skilled Regional Sponsored visas will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Skill - Is your (or your spouse’s) occupation in demand in Tasmania or on Tasmania's SRSO list ?

  • Employment - Do you have a job offer from a Tasmanian employer?  Have you thoroughly searched job opportunities in your nominated occupation?

  • English language requirements
Do you speak English at a level required to work in your nominated occupation?  Please click the link below to see requirements for each sponsorship.

  • Assets - How much money (excluding relocation costs) will you bring with you when you settle? Main applicants should have at least AUD $20,000 in transferable assets, with AUD $10,000 for each additional dependent family member.

  • Demonstrated links to Tasmania - such as family or friends, existing business networks and/or previous visits to the state.
