Am I eligible to apply for the Tasmanian state sponsorship?

You must have a positive skills assessment from a designated Australian assessing authority and your occupation should be on the Tasmanian Skilled Sponsored Base Line List or the Tasmanian Skilled Sponsored Supplementary List.

For English language requirements, please refer to the above lists. Levels of English required for Tasmanian SS sponsorship are generally higher than immigration or skills assessment requirements. 

To be eligible for this visa, applicants must genuinely wish to live and work in Tasmania and, in addition to skills, Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts will consider factors such as:

  • pre-existing family, personal, education, business or commercial links with the state
  • a full time, bona fide job offer or strong interest from a local employer
  • previous visits to Tasmania
  • potential ease of settlement and employment
  • transferable assets.


Skilled - Regional (475) Visa

If you are applying for Tasmanian SRS sponsorship you must:

  • score at least 90 points (excluding 10 points for state sponsorship) in the Australian Government’s skilled migration points test
  • have a positive skills assessment from a recognised Australian assessing authority:
    • your occupation is on the Tasmanian SRS occupations list and you meet any specialisations/requirements applicable to your occupation; or
    • you recently graduated from a Tasmanian educational institution and returned to your home country but are still eligible for DIAC’s ‘work experience exemption’ based on the recent two year full time study.
  • have at least 12 months recent work experience in your nominated (or a closely related) occupation unless exempted based on recent study in Tasmania
  • meet the English language requirements relevant to your nominated occupation (see Tasmanian SRS occupations list). Levels of English required for Tasmanian SRS sponsorship are generally higher than immigration or skills assessment requirements.

Skilled - Sponsored (886) - Former Overseas Student

If you are applying for Tasmanian SS (subclass 886) sponsorship from inside Australia as a former overseas student you must:

  • be a new graduate of a Tasmanian educational institution;
  • secure a skilled job offer in your nominated or closely related occupation from a Tasmanian employer, and have worked in the job full time for more than three months after completing the qualification (Note: To achieve this, you will need to apply for a Skilled Graduate visa subclass 485 before applying for the SS sponsorship)
  • score at least 90 points (excluding 10 points for State sponsorship) in the Australian Government’s skilled migration points test;
  • have obtained or at least applied for a skills assessment from a recognised Australian assessing authority for your nominated occupation; and
  • meet DIAC’s minimum English language requirements (depending on your nominated occupation).



Skilled – Regional (487) - Former Overseas Student

If you are applying for Tasmanian SRS (subclass 487) sponsorship from inside Australia as a former overseas student you must:

  • be a new graduate of a Tasmanian educational institution; or
  • be a new graduate of an Australian educational institution, have relocated to Tasmania after completing the qualification and worked in a skilled job directly related to the nominated occupation full time for more than 3 months in Tasmania. (Note: If you require a skilled job offer, you may want to consider applying for a Skilled Graduate visa (subclass 485). The 485 visa may make it easier for you to apply for skilled work in Tasmania in order to become eligible to apply for Tasmanian SRS sponsorship.)
  • score at least 90 points (excluding 10 points for State sponsorship) in the Australian Government’s skilled migration points test
  • have applied for a skills assessment from a recognised Australian assessing authority in any occupation on the Australian Government’s Skilled Occupation List (SOL) and be able to meet any specialisations/requirements applicable to your occupation
  • Meet DIAC’s minimum English language requirements (depending on your nominated occupation).

‘Concessional Competent English’ - an average band score of at least 5.5 based on all four components in the IELTS test - is only available to new graduates who studied in Tasmania and meet all other sponsorship criteria.

 

Skilled - Regional (487) - Working Holiday Makers

If you are applying forTasmanian SRS (subclass 487) sponsorship from inside Australia as a working holiday maker or occupational trainee, you must:

  • have worked in a skilled job directly related to the nominated occupation full time for more than three months in Tasmania.


‘Concessional Competent English’ - an average band score of at least 5.5 based on all four components in the IELTS test - is available to applicants if they have met the above requirements.  Please note such applicants must pay to attend English language tuition. Concessional English

‘Concessional Competent English’ - an average band score of IELTS 5.5 - is only available to new graduates who studied in Tasmania and meet all other sponsorship criteria.

Concessional English under subclass 475 ceased to be offered in November 2008.

Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts reserves the right to modify conditions/requirements of sponsorship subject to labour market changes.
