Tasmanian Skilled Migration Sponsorship

Uk-webicon-2010Tasmania offers a wide range of employment opportunities for skilled migrants, as well as a great lifestyle in one of the world’s most beautiful environments. The state’s economy has developed rapidly in recent years, and despite the recent economic changes, there are still skills shortages in particular areas.

If you are a prospective skilled migrant who wishes to settle in Tasmania, Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts can sponsor your visa application through the Skilled Sponsored visa or Skilled Regional Sponsored visa schemes. State sponsorship applications have been given priority processing from Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

If you are an independent migrant (i.e. you do not have an employer sponsoring your visa application) and you are applying for a skilled visa the following visa options are available:

Skilled – Sponsored Visa (subclass 176)

This visa provides you with permanent residency but you must live and work in the sponsoring state at least for the first two years. To find out more information on this visa, please visit DIAC’s website - Skilled – Sponsored (176) visa

To qualify, you must meet DIAC’s basic requirements and obtain sponsorship from a state or territory government or from an eligible relative living in Australia. This visa is given highest priority by DIAC making it the quickest non-employer sponsored visa.

500 ‘off-list’ Nominations (under subclass 176)

DIAC recently updated its Skilled Migration Programme policy, offering state and territory governments a quota of 500 places to sponsor skilled migrants in occupations not appearing on the base-line list recommended by DIAC.  For subclass 176, Tasmania’s policy on using these 500 ‘off-list’ places allows applicants to apply only if their occupation appears on the Supplementary Eligible Occupations List.

Skilled –Sponsored Former Overseas Student Visa (subclass 886)

This visa provides you with permanent residency but you must live and work in the sponsoring state at least for the first two years after visa grant. To find out more information on this visa, please visit DIAC’s website - Skilled – Sponsored Former Overseas Student (886) visa

For Tasmanian state sponsorship, you must be a ‘new graduate’ from an educational institution in Tasmania and have worked in a skilled occupation for more than 3 months after graduation.

If you completed a qualification on the mainland Australia, you are not eligible to apply for Tasmanian 886 sponsorship even with a job offer in Tasmania.

500 ‘off-list’ Nominations (under subclass 866)

The Tasmanian Government will use the off-list nominations under subclass 886 if the applicant met all the sponsorship requirements.  However, again, the eligibility requirements include completion of qualification from an educational institution in Tasmania.

This is a provisional visa of three years and allows the visa holders to live and work in ‘regional’ Australia.  The visa provides you with a pathway to permanent residency if you meet all the visa requirements whilst holding the visa.   To qualify, you must meet DIAC’s basic requirements and obtain sponsorship from a state or territory government or from an eligible relative living in Australia.
