Tasmania has some of the richest areas of mineralisation in the world and exports ores and concentrates of copper, zinc, tin and iron. There are high-grade gold mines, as well as major processing plants producing aluminium, zinc and ferro-alloys. High-grade nickel mineralisation has also been identified.
In 2004-05, Tasmanian miners and processors exported copper concentrate, iron, refined zinc, gold, manganese alloys, refined aluminium and other metals worth over $1,044 million. The government is actively promoting downstream processing, providing investor access to a comprehensive bank of geological data. A pool of skilled geologists, metallurgists, chemists and engineers are located in Tasmania.
The world's biggest energy business, Duke Energy International, has constructed a natural gas pipeline from Victoria to complement the island's hydro-electric system. The pipeline will supply up to 40 petajoules of gas annually. Operations utilising heat as a processing input will now have access to a cost-effective, reliable alternative power source releasing demand in the sector and leading to expansions, diversifications and greater value adding.
