Tasmania is Australia's most forested state and a major exporter of forest-based products.
The state has a world-class resource of hardwood, based on sustainably managed native eucalyptus forests and plantations of fast-growing eucalypt cultivars, as well as exotic softwoods (Pinus radiata).
More than 100 million trees are growing in these plantations with five million new plantings each year to ensure resource sustainability.
Paper mills operate at three locations and the world's largest production line for medium density fibreboard was constructed in the 1990s. Smaller scale local businesses produce milled timber, furniture, veneers, flooring and other value-added products. Tasmania is a major supplier of hardwood woodchips to the Japanese pulp and paper industry. With such a large resource and excellent timbers such as sassafras, myrtle, Blackwood and Huon pine, there are significant opportunities for additional local value-adding.
Forest-based tourism attractions around the state compliment harvesting and processing and draw large numbers of tourists to previously unexplored parts of Tasmania.
