The average full-time working week is 37.5 hours. Tasmanian workplaces generally operate between the hours of 8.45 am and 5pm. These times vary depending on where you work. Employment law states that workers must take a certain amount of paid and unpaid breaks (paid morning and afternoon breaks and unpaid lunch breaks).
It is normal for employees to wear suits and dress smartly in an office environment. If you do not work in an office, some companies will supply you with a uniform or subsidise your uniform costs.
As Tasmania is a small state (with less than half a million inhabitants), a lot of businesses and companies have low staff turnover, and in general are able to enjoy a close-knit family-orientated workplace.
Annual leave is generally four weeks. Tasmania also enjoys 21 public holidays each year.
Dependent on your occupation and the demand at a particular time, it could take you a few days or a few months to find work. You should not take this too personally.
The layout of a CV or resume may differ to what is acceptable in your home country. Our resettlement officer can review your CV to ensure it is appropriate. We can also provide you with contacts for professional resume writing if you would prefer.
If you are an electrician, plumber/gas fitter or air con refrigeration mechanic, you will need to undergo further on-shore licensing when you arrive in Tasmania. Dependent on your occupation, you will need to contact the relevant licensing body for specific details.
You cannot take any testing or be granted with a provisional licence prior to arriving in Tasmania/Australia.
ELECTRICAL
In the first instance, you will need to enquire at Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) to have your qualifications assessed once you are in Australia. When you have been issued with a certificate (ARTC), you can contact Electricity Standards & Safety to apply for a provisional licence.
For further details, contact Warren Crichton

AIR CON & REFRIGERATION
Contact Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) to have your skills recognised in Australia. Once this has been completed, you will need to apply for a ‘National Refrigerant Handling Licence’ through the licencing body ARCTICK. Their website is http://www.arctick.org and you will find the application form under ‘downloads’.
