Tasmanians are renowned for their friendliness and the physical environment is equally welcoming.
Most of Tasmania's 473,000 residents live on the main island, roughly between 41 and 43 degrees south of the equator. They enjoy a temperate maritime climate, without the seasonal extremes experienced at similar latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere.
Hobart, the picturesque capital, receives more sunshine each day and less than half the annual rainfall of Sydney, Australia's largest city. In winter, snow frequently falls on Tasmania's highlands, but is extremely rare in the centres of population.
