The world has discovered Tasmania in recent years. North America's Travel and Leisure ranked it third in its top 100 travel destinations for 2001. Another North American magazine Conde Nast Traveller (circ 70,000), voted Tasmania the world's top temperate island for two years running and in 2004 National Geographic Traveller magazine ranked Tasmania third on a worldwide destination index of 115 locations.
Natural beauty, colonial architecture, friendly people and access to one for the world's largest remaining tracts of temperate wilderness draw visitors from other Australian states and overseas. Visitors can potter around antique shops and craft outlets, admire gardens, a tulip farm or hectares of lavender. They can bushwalk in magnificent wilderness, cruise timeless rivers, ride historic steam trains, experience Tasmania's unique wildlife and then spoil themselves in a variety of accommodation, including luxury lodges and cosy colonial establishments. Tasmania attracts around 820,000 visitors a year and the state is increasingly popular as a cruise ship stopover. Opportunities range from investment in major infrastructure to operating one of the state's many boutique bed and breakfast establishments.
