Tasmania's coastline abounds with a variety of marine resources and there is strong demand in export markets for rock lobsters, wild and farmed abalone, oysters, Atlantic salmon, ocean run trout and deep-sea fish species. As it expands and moves into new areas such as rock lobster farming, aquaculture is rapidly overhauling wild fisheries in terms of revenue and export earnings. The excellence of the coastal environment, along with stringent hygiene practices, enable Tasmanians to export live seafood products.
The Tasmanian aquaculture industry has a reputation for self-reliance and has developed considerable expertise in the production of salmon cages, netting, computerised feeding equipment and other hardware. Trade in this equipment and associated services is growing quickly.
There are many opportunities associated with existing and new aquaculture species and value-adding of both cultivated species and the wild catch. Seafood exports in 2004-05 were in excess of $139 million.
