Tasmania's physical attributes and unique reputation generate a wealth of opportunities in this sector. The state's soil is fertile and productive and is complemented by clean air, reliable rainfall and an absence of many major pests and diseases. Vegetables, fruit, dairy products and meat are significant exports, while boutique wineries and award-winning beers enhance the 'gourmet isle' reputation. In an area of the globe dominated by oceans, Tasmania is one of the few places able to supply fresh, temperate zone produce out-of-season to the Northern Hemisphere. In 2004-05, food and beverage exports totalled $478.16 million.

Innovative farmers and offshore investors are moving into high value niche products such as strawberries, cherries, game meat, nuts, truffles, wasabi, essential oils, buckwheat and saffron. Traditional products such as apples, superfine wool, potatoes and beef are exported in large quantities. Grapes grown in Tasmania's cool climate are snapped up by mainland producers and the distinctive local wines are winning accolades from all over the world.

Business migrants are involved in viticulture, cropping, beef and dairy farming throughout the state.
