International students

For over 40 years, Tasmania has been a destination of choice for international students from countries in Asia, Europe and North/South America. Tasmania has developed an international reputation for its high standard of teaching and for its friendly, safe environment.

Our combination of first class Australian education, our relaxed island lifestyle and lower cost of living than Australia’s largest cities makes Tasmania an excellent choice for international students.

There are a range of education choices available in Tasmania, from government run primary and high schools from years 1 – 12, through to independent and Catholic schools, along with the University of Tasmania, and TAFE diplomas from the Tasmanian Polytechnic. The Tasmanian Government’s Department of Education is responsible for preparing students for university entrance and their career beyond. Selected Tasmanian Government schools are also open to international students, giving them an opportunity to improve their English, and receive a quality education. The Department of Education’s international office, Government Education and Training International (GETI) welcomes international students to:

  • Primary school (Years 1 – 6)
  • High school (Years 7 – 10)
  • Senior secondary college (Years 11 and 12)
  • The Tasmanian Polytechnic (TAFE diplomas and articulation to the University of Tasmania)
