Forestry and associated processing is Tasmania’s largest industry sector in terms of value-adding and second largest in terms of turnover. The forest industry sector represents approximately 4 per cent of the total Tasmanian workforce, employing more than 7,700 people directly with an additional estimated 1,300 people employed through associated activities such as transport and road building. The gross value of production for the sector is in the order of A$1,300 million.
T he Tasmanian forestry industry contributes significantly to national processing production, accounting for:
- 65 per cent of national hardwood production
- 70 per cent of decorative veneers
- 55 per cent of Australian newsprint production
- 50 per cent of Australian-produced printing and writing paper
- 45 per cent of woodchip exports.
