Attractive opportunities also exist for call centre operators. Tasmania is home to call centres for a number of large national and international operators such as Sitel, Vodafone, Qantas, Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, Excelior, and Centrelink. The industry employs over 5,500 staff.

A recent review indicates that the industry in Tasmania handles 247 million individual contacts each year through 48 contact centres operating through the state and that the volume of calls is expected to increase by 23 per cent over the 2006-07 financial year coinciding with a 16 per cent increase in staff. The report also shows that 56 per cent of Tasmania’s contact centre workers are employed on a full-time basis and that Tasmanian contact centre workers remain in their employment for an average of 46 months compared to the national average of 29 months.

Also, the staff turnover rate at Tasmanian contact centres is 14 per cent, below the national average of 16 per cent. Overall operating costs in Tasmania are lower than in other states with the average wage for a Tasmanian employee at A$34,33 compared to the national average of A$38,346.
