The Tasmanian ICT sector earns an estimated A$1.2 billion per annum and employs 2,800 full time equivalent employees. Low set-up costs and sophisticated communication infrastructure have led to significant growth in software development and other technology-based businesses in Tasmania. Industry growth is being assisted by the Intelligent Island Program in Tasmania;a joint Commonwealth-State venture focused on strategic investment in the development of internationally competitive information and communications technologies, and with the objective to create higher, long-term sustainable growth of the state’s ICT industry.
The Tasmanian ICT industry has achieved recognition in a number of fields, particularly the delivery of government services online, marine and aquaculture, use of ICT in education, health and science as well as the development of innovative industry-specific applications. All of this is supported by excellent telecommunications infrastructure including the state’s fibre optic cable network.
