Tasmania - Infrastructure

Energy

Tasmania’s energy network complements its unspoilt environment. The majority of Tasmania’s electricity is renewable hydro electricity. Wind power developments have been created for the north-west of the state and others are proposed.

The construction of Basslink, an undersea power cable linking Tasmania with the Australian continent, has provided further competition within the Tasmanian energy market. These projects further guarantee Tasmanian companies and residents a safe and reliable energy supply.

Importantly, Tasmania’s electricity supply has never been interrupted by industrial action.

Natural gas has arrived and businesses and homes are signing up. Outside New South Wales and Victoria, Tasmania has the lowest energy cost (consisting of electricity, fuel and gas) of any Australian state and the second lowest electricity cost of any state.
