Tasmania’s education system is a mixture of public and private systems offering a wide range of courses and teaching styles. Tasmania has one of the world’s highest proportions of school teachers with postgraduate qualifications and students can choose from well over 100 subjects in their final school years. Tasmania has some of the oldest and most prestigious independent schools in Australia. Most of the independent schools cater for boarders and some cater for students preferring a single-sex study environment. Excellent co-educational schools are also available.

The University of Tasmania, with campuses in Hobart, Launceston and Burnie, is one of Australia’s oldest and most respected tertiary institutions offering a wide-range of disciplines to its student population of about 16,000. Specialised further education is also available through the Tasmanian Polytechnic system and the Australian Maritime College, the national provider of maritime education and research.

Tasmania has a strong public research base, with a concentration of internationally recognised centres of excellence based around core strengths in agriculture, aquaculture, food production, environment, and health and information technology industries. There are ten registered research agencies in Tasmania - including the world-renowned Menzies Research Institute - focusing on science and technology-related research and employing in excess of 3,000 people.

The new, Hobart-based, Australian Innovation Research Centre – based at the University of Tasmania – researches innovation in emerging sectors such as biotechnology and nanotechnology, as well as established industries. It is headed by Professor Jonathan West, a Tasmanian who spent 18 years lecturing at Harvard University.

The Tasmanian Government continues to support programs and activities to attract more international students to Tasmanian educational institutions.

These include:

  • marketing and recruitment for Tasmanian Government schools and Tasmanian Polytechnic
  • providing support for familiarisation visits to the state by overseas agents through the Tasmanian Education Alliance collaborative
  • participation in overseas exhibitions and promotions the development of annual student surveys
  • supporting the delivery of market briefings by Australia Education International’s overseas counsellors in Tasmania.
