-          Tourism operation
-          Antarctic supply chain

Tasmania’s capital Hobart is one of five international Antarctic gateways and is quickly gaining a reputation as the pre-eminent International Antarctic gateway.  The introduction of an inter-continental air service to Antarctica from Hobart has reinforced this reputation.

The Tasmanian Antarctic sector generates approximately A$132 million dollars annually, with over half of this expended in Tasmania.  Hobart’s strengths as a gateway include the city’s long history with the Antarctic, it’s geographic proximity to the Antarctic continent and its unique cluster of Antarctic-related institutions, which include the Australian Antarctic Division, National Oceans Office and Institute for the Antarctic and Southern Oceans Studies (IASOS). These factors combined have seen Tasmania become a world-class centre for Antarctic, Sub-Antarctic and temperate marine research, logistics, support services and education.

Tasmania’s commitment to Antarctic science and ecosystem management is evident in the state’s long-established support of international Antarctic organisations. Tasmania has hosted the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) since 1982 and the Council of Managers for National Antarctic Programs (COMNAP) since 1997.

In 2005 signatories to the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) decided to establish the ACAP secretariat in Hobart.

Tasmania is also home port to a number of Antarctic vessels including the Aurora Australis and L’Astrolabe, the French Antarctic vessel.
