Tasmania’s energy network complements its unspoilt environment. The
majority of Tasmania’s electricity is renewable hydro electricity. Wind power
developments have been created for the north-west of the state and others are
proposed.
The construction of Basslink, an undersea power cable, across Bass
Strait and a gas connection linking Tasmania with the Australian continent, has
provided further competition within the Tasmanian energy market. These projects
further guarantee Tasmanian companies and residents a safe and reliable energy
supply.
Competitive
energy costs and alternative energy options are a clear advantage in Tasmania.
Large electricity customers can negotiate contracts for the supply of
electricity with licensed retailers. There is also scope for a large industrial
gas user to negotiate all charges directly with their supplier.
