Tasmania - Infrastructure

Energy

Tasmania’s energy network complements its unspoilt environment. The majority of Tasmania’s electricity is renewable hydro electricity. Wind power developments have been created for the north-west of the state and others are proposed.

Importantly, Tasmania’s electricity supply has never been interrupted by industrial action.

The construction of Basslink, an undersea power cable, across Bass Strait and a gas connection linking Tasmania with the Australian continent, has provided further competition within the Tasmanian energy market. These projects further guarantee Tasmanian companies and residents a safe and reliable energy supply.

Competitive energy costs and alternative energy options are a clear advantage in Tasmania. Large electricity customers can negotiate contracts for the supply of electricity with licensed retailers. There is also scope for a large industrial gas user to negotiate all charges directly with their supplier.
