Tasmania - Infrastructure

Telecommunications

Tasmania has the same advanced telecommunications infrastructure as elsewhere in Australia – a comprehensive telecommunications network that includes 2G and 3G mobile networks, DSL and wireless broadband, and digital capability at all nodes and exchange sites. Telstra is the main provider of services with a number of local and national service providers also operating.

The state will receive a substantial boost in competitive telecommunications through the commercialisation of the State Government’s fibre-optic network and the Basslink cable connecting the state to mainland Australia, encouraging new investment and competition in broadband facilities.

The 2009 roll-out of the National Broadband Network will also bring a world-class fibre-to-the-premises network delivering superfast broadband to Tasmanian homes and businesses.
