Initiative 1: Incubator

In-tellinc, the Intelligent Island Incubator, is a joint venture involving KPMG Tasmania, the University of Tasmania and others. This initiative has received $8 million in Intelligent Island funding.

In-tellinc has inducted 18 start-up ICT firms and is currently assisting 14 through physical incubation, extensive management assistance and financial investment. Three companies, including SmartVisit Solutions, CPact and OnPix have graduated and one withdrawn.

In-tellinc's incubation program is designed to lead companies through the commercialisation process incorporating product and service development, proof of market viability, creation of reference accounts, channels to market and establishment of a viable business model.

To date, In-tellinc has had a significant impact on the Tasmanian ICT industry, with revenue earned by companies under incubation at almost $8 million representing a growth of over 20 time starting revenue; the creation of 64 full-time positions; and total export revenue being $1.73 million.

In the 2003-04 year In-tellinc inducted six new companies, including:

  • Elliot Software - an architectural office management solution from Western Australia
  • Van Diemen Technology – which focuses on IT sales to the USA
  • Accommodata - software for the management of small to medium tourist accommodation
  • Psych Technologies – who have developed Short Progress Assessment (SPA), a mental health monitoring system
  • Convey IT - an online integrated conveyancing solution
  • Point Duty - tracking software to capture internet users who are engaging in illegal activities such as pornography or music piracy.

The Allen Consulting Group, commissioned by the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts (DCITA) to review Australia’s ICT incubators stated in their report of December 2003 that: “In-tellinc has done remarkably well in the short time it has been operating, particularly given its relatively remote location and small size of the Tasmanian ICT market. In-tellinc has made a genuine effort to include incubates from all over Tasmania.”

The recent announcement from DCITA that In-tellinc will become one of only eight Australian incubators to receive funding over the next four years, is very exciting for In-tellinc demonstrating and validating the success of this Intelligent Island initiative. The process to receive this funding was awarded through a competitive process that shows In-tellinc competes and performs with the best. To receive this funding In-tellinc had to be found to be one of Australia’s best incubators.

This funding will allow In-tellinc to maintain its program of investing in Tasmanian based ICT businesses to assist these early stage firms who use IT innovations as a key business driver to rapidly reach their full potential.
