Although Tasmania is a small state, it has the advantage of having a relatively stable and contained population. Tasmania has a unique environment for genetic research, with 60 per cent of Tasmanian’s having 19th Century immigrant ancestry.
The Menzies Research Institute is one of Australia’s leading population health research organisations, with 300 researchers working in areas such as biomedicine, genetics, epidemiology and pharmacogenomics. The Institute is also involved in commercialisation activities, including a study with a pharmaceutical company relating to cystic fibrosis and proof-of-concept studies on compounds for commercial development to treat peripheral and central nerve disorders and tissue repair.
