A dynamic cluster of internationally renowned organisations with research expertise in marine science, oceanography, geosciences and Antarctic and Southern Ocean studies call Tasmania home.

These research institutes are the largest group of marine science organisations in the southern hemisphere and with strong support from the Tasmanian Government there is a network of collaboration and co-operation rarely seen elsewhere.

Many private companies also benefit from this research collaboration. One such example is Marinova, a company that extracts bioactive compounds from the seaweed Undaria pinnatifida for use in nutraceutical, cosmetic and pharmaceutical development. Deep Sea Oils is also one of these businesses, collaboration with research organisations have enabled them to harvest shark liver oil from shark livers -which would otherwise be discarded by commercial fishermen-and turns it into a value-added bio-health product.
