On 4 June 2007 Premier Paul Lennon launched the State’s Biotechnology Strategy, with a target of trebling turnover from the sector in Tasmania by 2015. The launch took place at Marinova at Cambridge, a company that extracts elements from seaweed and turns them into medicines.

“The Biotechnology Strategy is another important component of the State Government’s plan to make Tasmania the Innovative Island,” Mr Lennon said.

“We are determined to work in partnership with a range of industry sectors to continue developing our innovative companies.

“Tasmania is a world-leader in the extraction of natural biotechnological products and developing these industries will help us grow the Tasmanian economy.

“We have developed a world-class reputation for innovation and I believe that fostering Tasmania’s innovative industries is vital to our brand and will create further investment and jobs in the future.

“Biotechnology is part of this future and is worth - exclusive of the poppy industry component - around $45 million annually to the State.

“The strategy aims to treble this figure by 2015.” he said.

Industry Focus

Large pharmaceutical companies have invested in Tasmania’s sizeable Agribiotech sector.  Johnson & Johnson and Glaxo Smith Kline operate facilities focused on extract crops located on Tasmania’s rich north west coast.

Tasmania is home to several innovative biotech companies including Tasmanian Alkaloids, Marinova, Botanical Resources Australia, ReWire Therapies and Deep Sea Oils.

AusBiotech

AusBiotech is Australia’s leading biotech industry organisation.

With support from Economic Development and Tourism, a Tasmanian Branch of this organisation was set-up in 2003.  The Executive Officer of the Tasmanian Branch works within the Innovation, Science & Technology Unit.  Tasmanian biotechnology events and meetings are conducted as a joint operation between the department and Ausbiotech.

Tasmanian Biotechnology Directory

The department has many opportunities to promote the State’s biotechnology capabilities both nationally and internationally.  To do this effectively we need input from all stakeholders within the industry, research and service areas of the sector.  A registry of all those working in this area in Tasmania is currently under development.  If you would like to advertise you company’s capabilities in this way please contact the IST Unit.
