Aquaculture

As an island state with a temperate environment, Tasmania offers vast opportunities to the aquaculture industry. In 2002, there were more than 3,000 hectares of water available in Tasmania for aquaculture activities by 190 licensed farms.

Aquaculture in Tasmania has developed into one of the state’s major industries Species commercially farmed in Tasmania included abalone, scallops, mussels,trout and salmon, with Atlantic salmon, Pacific Oysters and mussels the most farmed species.  While it makes up a relatively small part of the world Atlantic salmon makets, Tasmania is well known for its high quality produce.
