The Manufacturing Industry Council was established in October 2000. The council represents six sub-sectors of the industry:
- Small and specialised manufacturing
- Manufacturing industry support services
- Textile clothing and footwear
- Light and heavy engineering industry
- Printing industries
- Marine industry (sub committee)
The Council has developed a vision for Tasmanian manufacturing to "expand a profitable manufacturing sector based on a suite of globally leading, competitive, innovative products directed to growth markets outside Tasmania". The Council has further developed an Industry Plan to implement the vision. (see document below)

The Marine Industry sub-committee was formed in August 2000. Three members of the sub-committee have representative rights on the Manufacturing Industry Council. The Marine Industry sub-committee has developed a set of priority issues which form part of the planning process for the broader manufacturing sector.
The sub-committee is incorporated within the highly-regarded Tasmania Maritime Network (TMN). Recently, the TMN has published a new edition of its Company and Product Guide which features many sophisticated products and services supplied by network members to world markets.
