Manufacturing

Manufacturing is an important and growing sector of Tasmania's economy.

The export-orientated industry includes world-competitive businesses in the marine sector, wood processing, automotive components, communications technology, lightning protection, aquaculture equipment and fine food and beverages.

One of the strongest growing areas of the industry is the machinery and equipment manufacturing sector, which includes marine, heavy engineering, mining equipment and electrical products.

The manufacturing industry employs more than 11 per cent of the state's workforce and provides a substantial contribution to overseas and interstate exports.

The industry has continued to provide jobs, increase turnover, value add and improve labour productivity despite the pressure of lowered domestic tariff protection and increased competition from overseas.

Australian Bureau of Statistics figures (1999-2000) show that:

  • total turnover of manufacturing has increased
  • total manufacturing exports has increased
  • total value-adding in the manufacturing industry has increased
  • employment has remained relatively stable, decreasing in some manufacturing sectors but increasing in others.

The Department of Economic Development and Tourism is focused on improving the quality, profitability and success rate of Tasmanian manufacturing and services enterprises.

We have a strong interest in proposals that are linked to specific arrangements for import replacement or export production.

Project-specific assistance will be considered for projects that will:

  • result in substantial employment growth potential
  • be sustainable in the long-term without subsidy
  • most likely not occur in Tasmania without assistance.

Priority investment sectors are:

  • heavy engineering
  • light engineering
  • fabrication
  • elaborately transformed manufacture
  • light metals and downstream processing
  • boat building and marine fabrication and engineering
  • professional and business services.

We provide assistance with business investment proposals relating to new and existing activities that meet established development aims and can contribute to the state's economic growth.

The department has compiled the Manufacturers Capability Register, a detailed listing of over 600 manufacturing businesses in the State.
