Tasmania Top 8 Wines

Economic Development hosted a follow-up visit by Francis Wong of Top 8 Wines in August. The latest visit was to conduct follow-up meetings with various vineyards to finalise a selection of Top 8 Tasmanian Wines.

The Top 8 vineyards and wines selected are:

1. Pirie - Pinot Estate Pinot Noir 05, Pirie South Riesling and Pirie South Sauvignon Blanc

2. Moores Hills - Chardonnay 05 and Riesling

3. Brook Eden - Pinot Noir 05 and Riesling

4. Aspley Gorge - Pinot Noir 05

5. Bream Creek - Schonburger 05 and Riesling

6. Meadow Bank - Pinot Gris 05 and Sauvignon Blanc

7. Moorilla Estate - Riesling Estate 05 and Pinot Noir Estate

8. Home Hill - Pinot Noir 05 and Chardonnay Kelly

The development of a Top 8 Tasmanian wine selection is the result of a promotion between Mr Francis Wong and Dr Andrew Pirie in Asia in May. Francis will visit again in October to officially launch Top 8 Tasmanian Wines. It is predicted that a trade mission to Singapore and Malaysia in February will be conducted to assist in the promotion of the wines in these markets. Melbourne Gift Fair

Four Tasmanian companies participated in the Melbourne Gift Fair in August. The trade show provided an opportunity for the Tasmanian companies to meet with a number of national and international buyers, with all participating companies achieving strong sales results. The participating companies were: Art Viva, Beauty and the Bees, Compact Designs, and Mithi Mia.

Health Informatics Conference 2006

Economic Development assisted five Tasmanian eHealth companies to maximise their participation at Health Informatics Conference 2006 in Sydney. All companies exhibited with their own stand under the Tasmania brand, attended an Health industry seminar, attended a networking event with international companies, had one-on-one business meetings with interested buyers and were provided with export opportunities through interaction with a visiting UK eHealth Trade delegation.

Australian Biotechnology International Conference (ABIC)

In August, Melbourne was the host city for ABIC providing an opportunity for participants from the agricultural biotechnology sector to explore drivers and barriers to research, development, innovation and commercialisation. Economic Development coordinated a delegation of Tasmanian businesses to attend this event. The Tasmanian biotechnology industry is currently responding to a Australian Government issues and discussion paper on preferred strategies for the future that includes identifying and providing access to national and global marketing technologies.

A planned future activity for the sector will be attendance at BIO 2007 International Convention to be held in Boston in May. For further information contact Wendy Spencer, Wendy.Spencer@development.tas.gov.au.

Australasian Aquaculture Exhibition

Seven Tasmanian companies participated in a Tasmanian grouping coordinated by Economic Development at the Australasian Aquaculture trade show in Adelaide from 28 - 30 August. The trade show provided the opportunity for the Tasmanian companies to meet with a number of potential buyers. All participating companies indicated they had received strong interest and potential leads that will be negotiated in the near future.

Fine Food Melbourne

Twelve Tasmanian companies participated in the Fine Food Australia exhibition held in Melbourne from September 11-14, with eight of the companies participating for the first time. Economic Development coordinated the Tasmanian grouping which had discussions with a number of national and international buyers. The exhibition presented an opportunity for the Tasmanian participants to showcase their range of products among 750 exhibitors from Australia and overseas.

The Tasmanian companies that participated were: Ashbolt Elderflower, Ashgrove Cheese, Blue Hills Honey, Cradle Mountain Honey, Cripps Nubake, Hartz International, Naturally Nichols/Hill Farm, Springfield Tasmania, Tasman Group Services, Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Co, Tasmanian Mountain Waters, and Tasmanian Quality Foods.

Asian Shipping and Work Boat Asia

Economic Development is coordinating a Tasmanian Maritime industry grouping at Asian Shipping and Workboat Asia exhibition to be held in Singapore from 6-8 February 2007. The event focuses on all types of ships and work boats including passenger and vehicle ferries; container ships; tankers; bulkers; tugs; offshore support vessels; fishing boats; harbour craft; oil spill recovery, rescue, patrol and pilot boats; aquaculture boats, naval vessels and dredgers as well as port operations and shipbuilding.

Planned marketing initiatives for the mission include: An exhibition stand for promotional purposes at the Asian Shipping and Workboat Asia exhibition; a customer business matching program for interested companies; Uniformity of stand furniture and design under the Tasmania - Australia brand; all company information flyer; and an invite only networking event. Retail Food Inward Buyers

Economic Development hosted two inward buyer missions in conjunction with Fine Food Melbourne in September. International buyers from both NTUC Fairprice, Singapore and Park'n'Shop, Hong Kong visited the state and met with a number of existing and new suppliers. National Marine Safety Conference

Five Tasmanian companies participated at the National Marine Safety Conference Exhibition on the Gold Coast from September 12-14. The conference and exhibition aims to bring together industry and government leaders to discuss the latest maritime safety initiatives.

Economic Development coordinated the Tasmanian grouping which consisted of: Australian Maritime College, Fiomarine Industries Pty Ltd, Moonraker Australia Pty Ltd, Pivot Maritime International, and Stormy Australia Pty Ltd. Tasmanian Companies Receive Medals at Fine Food Awards

A number of Tasmanian companies were medal recipients at the Sydney Royal Fine Food Show. Tasmanian Gourmet Sauce Company were a gold medal recipient for their olive and caper pasta sauce. Other medal winners were Wursthaus, Tasea Enterprises, Tasmanian Pitt Water Oysters and Tasmanian Gourmet Kitchen.

Australian Export Award Winner Continues to Grow

Australian Export Award winner Muir Engineering has recently shipped major export orders to shipyards in the United Kingdom, Germany, Holland and Russia. Muir Engineering was winner of the 2004 Australian Export Award for Small to Medium Manufacturers. The new export orders received were for a range of equipment ranging between 50 and 80 metres. Muir Engineering is a world leader in the design and manufacture of anchoring systems and windlasses for pleasure craft, commercial vessels and super-yachts.

Tasmania and Fujian Province Celebrate Sister-State Relationship

The 25th anniversary of Tasmania's sister-state relationship with China's Fujian Province was celebrated in August. The milestone celebrated the cultural and trade relations between the two regions, with acknowledgement made of Tasmania's world-class minerals, seafood, wool and timber products. Governor Huang Xiaojing accepted an invitation from Premier Paul Lennon to lead a return delegation to Tasmania later in 2006 to celebrate the anniversary.

AQIS Export Facilitation Program

Delivery arrangements for the AQIS Export Facilitation Program have changed. The service will now be delivered by staff in AQIS Regional offices or by AQIS Canberra-based staff (rather than designated Export Facilitation officers in Regional offices). The change in delivery aims to reach more prospective exporters, improve national consistency in program delivery and better utilise communication technology. For more information, see the website.

Professional Development and Educational Opportunities

E-Business Workshops

A one day workshop was held in Launceston and Hobart in September for Tasmanian exporters that wanted to know more about using electronic business practices within their business. E-business for Exporting introduced participants to key areas in the implementation of e-business. The workshop was delivered by two internet specialists from Austrade and included interactive feedback, open discussion, and practical advice on participants' websites. Export Practices Workshop

The Australian Institute of Export and Economic Development are again holding a two-day workshop to provide exporters with all the necessary information to assist with the export process.

The workshop involves presentations from an experienced international lawyer, freight forwarder, marine insurer and banker on all aspects of the export process. The principles of export documentation, international law, marine insurance and banking/finance will be examined in detail.

This workshop takes a practical hands-on approach and is suitable for those involved in various aspects of the export transaction. This may include sales and marketing managers, production managers/supervisors and shipping/administration staff. We expect to hold the workshop in November (actual dates yet to be confirmed) at the Tamar Valley Resort, Grindelwald. South East Asian Seminar

Austrade and Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) will be presenting a seminar in Hobart: South East Asia - free trade agreements with our neighbours. Guest speakers include Mr Michael Mugliston, Head, Asia Task Force, DFAT and Dr Gita Nandan, author of ASEAN, Building an Economic Community.
