ICT Trade Mission, United States of America26 – 30 October 2009 The United States of America (USA) is the second largest export market, behind the United Kingdom, for Tasmanian Information and Communications Technology (ICT) software developers. Much of this sales growth has been generated in the education sector, specifically the kindergarten to year twelve (K-12) and university e-learning product market segments. In an effort to capitalise on this growth the department is coordinating a market development mission of education and corporate e-learning ICT enterprises to participate in organised partnering and networking events, and a program of business meetings arranged through Austrade. The mission will culminate in a networking event at the Australian Embassy in Washington DC for high-level representatives and stakeholders within Local and Federal USA Government and education institutions involved in e-learning, regulations, funding developments and administration. Initial positive response to participating in the mission has come from the following companies: The Learning Edge International, Etech Group, Autech Software and Design and Roar Educate. For more information on the mission contact Mark Warrener on (03) 6233 5879 or Mark.Warrener@development.tas.gov.au Tasmania Unbottled roadshow
The second Tasmania Unbottled roadshow, which was held in Melbourne (4 August 2009), Sydney (11 August 2009) and Brisbane (13 August 2009) was a great success. This year’s event saw the largest ever contingent of winemakers and wine marketers collaborating to represent the island’s leading wine brands. Thirty vineyards presented product to over 1 000 consumers and trade representatives. The events in each city featured separate trade and consumer tasting sessions, varietal wine flights and the popular ‘Bubbles Rising’ masterclass. All three wine exhibitions attracted high-calibre trade clientele – notably specialist independent retailers and the sommeliers of leading restaurants in each city. The interactive workshop provided practical insights into issues affecting offshore operations. In addition, a case study was presented by local ICT company, The Learning Edge International, that provided a real life example of the issues faced when setting up an overseas operation. For more information about this workshop, please contact Mark Warrener on (03) 6233 5879 or email Mark.Warrener@development.tas.gov.au Philippine buyers visitThe unit, in conjunction with Bemco Australia Pty Ltd, hosted an inward buyer meeting on 14 August 2009 for eight Tasmanian companies. Whisky Live, Sydney4 – 6 September 2009 Whisky Live is a trade show providing commercial distilleries from around the globe with an opportunity to showcase whiskies to key trade and consumers. The first Whisky Live event was in London in 2000 and has since grown into an international event held annually in more than 20 cities across the world and for the first time in Sydney in September. Several masterclasses were held in the days before the main three-day trade event where more than 100 whiskies from over 35 exhibitors were presented. The department coordinated the stand where three Tasmanian distilleries, Hellyers Road, Lark Distillery and Sullivans Cove showcased their range of single malt whiskies. The Tasmanian stand was one of the busiest throughout the event with very strong interest being shown in the products distilled in Tasmania. Our involvement included joint naming rights sponsorship of the Taste of Tasmania Cocktail Reception on 4 August 2009, and a presence on a joint display booth with DPIPWE at the associated horticultural expo. The Tasmanian Government’s support of horticulture was highlighted in a recent article in the national rural newspaper, Weekly Times Now with a Yarra Valley cherry grower stating that: “Market access is a big thing [in Tasmania]. They’ve got cheaper land and water and the government is right behind them – they recognise the value of horticulture. We [in Victoria] don’t seem to see that same level of Government support.”
