Forestry and related products
Tasmania is the most forested state in Australia, endowed with vast forestry resources.
We have a world-class sustainably managed forestry industry that contributes substantially to the economy and provides significant regional employment opportunities.
Tasmania is focused on ensuring we protect land and our ecosystems for future generations with:
- more than two-thirds of Tasmania’s public land included as reserves
- 47 per cent of our forests are in reserve
- 80 per cent of old growth forests are protected
Forestry operations in Tasmania are independently certified under Australian Forestry Standard (AFS) which sets stringent environmental, social and economic criteria for forest management and production tracking. The industry is also currently assessing the Forest Stewardship Council’s internationally recognised procedures.
Opportunities exist for investment in:
- value-adding forestry related manufacturing activities such as veneer production
- plantation development - a 2005 agreement is leading to a phase-out of clearing native forest and a focus on plantation-based harvesting
- the processing of surplus hardwood pulpwood into wood products.
