Tasmania is about to become one of the most connected places on the planet
As the lead jurisdiction in Australia for the roll-out of a National Broadband Network (NBN), Tasmania is attracting significant attention for its direct fibre-to-the-premises connection that will soon be available to over 90 per cent of homes, businesses, schools and hospitals.
The Tasmanian Government is focused on leveraging this opportunity to create an innovative, sustainable and vibrant digital industry by:
- supporting businesses to engage with the digital economy
- assisting the Information Communications Techonology (ICT) industry to exploit development opportunities from NBN-capable applications, technologies and services
- providing greater community access to a range of new services that take advantage of the capabilities of the NBN, with a particular focus on government and community services in areas such as health, education, smart energy management and government online services
- delivering online services to the community and businesses which fully exploit the NBN’s capacity and functionality to become both interactive and collaborative.
Tasmania’s geographic, demographic and economic diversity along with its size means that it provides a robust, representative and easily accessible sample population for digital companies and research organisations wanting to test and adapt their products for a western market.
Currently the Tasmanian ICT and digital industries sector generates annual revenue over $1.4 billion, spends over $9.5 billion on research and development, and employs around 2 700 people.
Opportunities exist for investment in:
- home or office networking
- cloud computing
- content creation and development including social networking, gaming, entertainment, cloud-based data services, mobility and telepresence applications
- creating business in the digital economy
- smart research.
Through improved access to super-fast broadband, Tasmania is expected to become a hub for digital content developers, digital technology innovators and digital economy entrepreneurs.

Testimonials
Kreglinger
We began winemaking in Tasmania over 40 years ago. The island’s sunny but mild ripening conditions bestow a finesse and clarity of flavour to our entirely estate grown grapes. This ensures a distinctive reflection of its location and vintage. The climate in the Pipers Brook and Pipers River districts compares favourably with conditions in the French district of Champagne. Tasmania offers without doubt the perfect climate for our operations.- Paul de Moor, CEO - Kreglinger
Fonterra
As the world’s leading dairy exporter we collect and process two thirds of Tasmania’s milk. We manufacture the iconic Duck River Butter and a range of cheeses and milk powders which are sold both locally and internationally. We are committed to manufacturing these high quality products using fresh milk sourced from our supplies, and continue to invest in capacity and infrastructure to grow our future production in Tasmania.- John Doumani, Managing Director, Fonterra ANZ
