Tasmanian merchandise export statistics for the 2010-2011 financial year have been released by the ABS. The results show total exports were valued at $3 171 million, an increase of $172 million on the previous year. The Food and Beverage sector had significant impact on this growth with an increase of 4.6% on last year with noted strong growth in dairy products and in salmon both in dollar terms and volume. These gains to the sector were however impacted by a decline in both abalone and rock lobster, where both products suffered a decline that was influenced by changes to market access to Mainland China. High commodity prices for ores and concentrates provided gains in this sector without increasing volumes, similarly with aluminium products; however these gains were offset in part by the continuing decline in the demand for woodchips that continue to reduce in value and volume together with a marginal decline in volume and price for zinc and associated products.
Mainland China is Tasmania’s largest export market with over $565 million in exports. Japan is the second largest export market followed by the Taiwan, India, Republic of Korea, United States of America and Malaysia.
