Welcome to the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and the Arts.
This website provides information for anyone with an interest in economic development, innovation, science and technology, tourism, arts and culture, and recreation and sport in Tasmania.
Our department is broad in scope but with a common purpose of working together to make Tasmania a prosperous, vibrant and healthy community in which to live, work, and do business.
We are committed to improving the prosperity of all Tasmanians through development which is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable and showcases our state’s natural advantages.
We aim to create a competitive business environment, promoting and attracting investment, and we are the first point of contact for companies wishing to establish, relocate, diversify or expand in Tasmania. We also act as a conduit to other state and Australian Government departments, local government and Tasmanian businesses.
We help individuals, businesses and industries to grow and become internationally competitive. We work across a broad range of industry sectors, particularly those that are focused on exports and import replacement. We manage projects, develop policies, undertake planning, and deliver programs and services in partnership with industry sectors.
Consequently the department has taken a lead role in the development of a new Economic Development Plan that articulates future economic development priorities for Tasmania at an economy-wide, sectoral and regional level.
Through Tourism Tasmania we market Tasmania as a world-class tourism destination and deliver marketing and development programs that drive benefits for Tasmania from national and international tourism.
Through Arts Tasmania and the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery we support the development of the arts sector in Tasmania, and through Sport and Recreation Tasmania we aim to ensure all Tasmanians have the opportunity to participate in sport, recreation and physical activity and share in the benefits of a healthy community.
We promote Tasmania as one of the world’s most liveable places - a place people choose to live, study, work, visit, invest and trade.
As a values-based organisation, we demonstrate our values in all that we do and how we deliver it. Our guiding principles are:
- our people matter
- we act with integrity
- we make a real difference.
This website has been developed using these values as a foundation. Your feedback as to whether or not we have succeeded in meeting our goals, and whether or not our website meets your expectations, is most welcome.
