Training employees

Training provides employees the opportunity to gain the practical skills, competencies, qualifications or knowledge to undertake a job.

Research shows that training your employees increases:

  • productivity and profits
  • customer satisfaction and quality of product
  • staff retention and attendance.

You can get the most out of your employees when they’re taught the skills that will help you to achieve your business’s goals. All employees can benefit from learning new skills – including managers.

What are your training needs?

Work out what type of training is required for your employees by carrying out a training needs analysis (TNA). This will help you to assess the existing level of skill among employees and to identify any training that may be required for present or future roles in the business.

Developing the skills of current employees

Have you considered developing the qualifications or competencies of your existing employees as an alternative to recruiting new ones? Offering development opportunities will make employees feel valued and secure. It will also reflect positively on your business, which will be regarded as a place where people can progress beyond their starting positions. This will increase some employee’s motivation and encourage them to stay with your business for longer.

You may find that the skills your business needs already lie within your organisation. These skills can be transferred across the company through a mentoring system. Mentoring has a number of advantages:

  • focuses on your business's specific needs
  • may not disrupt your business if timed appropriately
  • cheaper than outsourcing your training
  • may be monitored carefully and its pace adjusted to suit the learner.
