Developing employees

Better Workplaces

Developing employees

The holistic growth of employees is beneficial to the business as well as the employee. Employee development includes skills development and career planning.

Skill development

Employee development ensures that your business has people with the skills to keep it sustainable and growing.

Through the performance management process, it is important to consider:

  • the skill development required for staff to meet the demands of the business in the long term
  • where development can improve work satisfaction for employees.

Career planning

This is an interactive process between the employee and the employer, to plan the employee’s future employment. Their plan usually will include information about the kind of employers they would like to work for, the jobs they would like to do and skills required.

The performance management process will help to:

  • set some career goals and develop a career plan for the individual
  • determine how the career plan will be evaluated to ensure that the individual is developing the right skills for the career they want to pursue.
