Induct, train and develop

It makes good business sense to invest in your employees’ inductions, training and development. Your business is likely to be more innovative, productive and profitable if your employees are provided with training and development opportunities and if you encourage them to keep learning new skills.

Inducting employees

Inductions help new employees to settle into your business more easily. A good induction will provide all the information about the business a new person needs: your expectations of them, their role and where they fit into your organisation. This will decrease their anxiety about their new job and allow them to be more efficient  and productive.

Induction tips

Here are some tips to help with inductions.

  • Here are some tips to help with inductions.
  • Prepare for arrival – inform staff and organise the employee’s work area.
  • Set up a buddy system – appoint a mentor to show the new employee the ropes.
  • Follow-up afterwards – determine whether the induction was a success.
  • Tailor inductions for different types of employees – some groups might need different information. Think about what these people will need to know, for example school leavers, career changers/mature workers, graduates, employees with special needs, and existing employees in new roles.
